In The Copper Vine we find our long-lived ‘Veteres,’ Anne de Sarlat, abbess of a prosperous convent in Cyprus in 1349. She came to the order as Anna de Lusignan, rose to become Mother Barnabé, and now seeks a way to move unobtrusively on. Anna spars with the rich and powerful in the de Lusignan court, and faces exposure by the historical Muslim traveler, Ibn Battuta, who has his own secrets to keep. Cyprus, specifically Famagusta, has become one of the wealthiest trading centers in the world. Its dark crevices nourish the seeds of the Black Death; in its chaos, the scourge may offer a way for Anna to make the transition to her next life.
The Copper Sword opens as Anna di Franco, our returning ‘Vetus,’ secretly celebrates her four-hundred and seventy-fifth birthday, as close as she can reckon. In 1472, she is lady-in-waiting to the young Queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro, who rules in her own right after the mysterious deaths of her husband, Jacques II le Bâtard de Lusignan, known as James the Bastard, and her adored infant son. Anna weds a wealthy Christianized Moor, witnesses the end of the golden age of the Lusignan Dynasty, and beholds the coming of a new Venetian lion, one with wings.
